Three Very Different AR Triggers
Over the last decade the AR-15 has experienced and enormous surge of popularity that manufacturers have sought to profit from. The CAD/CAM/CNC revolution has lead to a plethora of small engineering companies and hobbyists turning out high quality components and assemblies at highly competitive prices. The result is a plethora of AR trigger groups of which we will look at a few that use different approaches.
The Timney range of triggers offer very easy fitting through unit construction. The Timney AR trigger comes in a gold anodized drop in housing and the trigger blade is gold. In the AR-15 units this can be had in conventional or skeletonized format. As you would expect with a Timney unit, top quality metallurgy is employed. S7 tool steel is wire EDM cut and teflon coated for the hammer and other components are machined from A2 tool steel which is heat treated to Rc 56-60 and black oxide coated for corrosion resistance. AR15 (.223) units give a 3lb pull, whilst the AR-308 versions have a 4lb pull because of the heavier hammer they need to reliably ignite the tougher .308 primers. These units are easy to fit and require no gunsmithing. Only small pin receivers are catered for. They cannot be used on recent production Colts for example. The unit approach does make the unit harder to keep clean than a component or factor trigger. This makes it a questionable choice for use on a service weapon.
Rock River Arms went the component route in designing their National Match trigger. The Rock River AR National Match trigger economises on machining and makes for a lighter unit. Component triggers are a little more difficult to fit than unitary ones, but the Rock River unit is straightforward to fit and is supplied with full instructions. The kit contains a trigger, hammer, disconnect and the necessary pins. Ingenious use of geometry has resulted in a lighter, smoother and very consistent two-stage pull. The sear engagement point has been put behind the hammer. Again this unit is designed for small pin ARs only. This unit is available in 3.5lb., 4.5 to 5lb. and 5.5 50 6lb. versions. These triggers are assembled on a special rig and honed and tested until they are considered ready for dispatch.
The Accuracy Speaks AR trigger is an expensive trigger, particularly for a component unit, but one that gives excellent performance. To look at it is very similar to the mil spec unit, but could not be more different from it in performance. An improved sea engagement angle provides a smoother, crisper more consistent pull and let off. Stainless steel is used for the main components, EDM machined and hand polished for consistency. The unit is adjustable from 3½ to 4½ lbs. This unit does require some gunsmithing to achieve a correct fit. Both small and large pin receivers are catered for with specific models. The Accuracy Speaks trigger, together with gunsmithing, will lighten your wallet considerably, but it is an investment in quality and performance.
