Safe Garden Pest Control
Take some time right now and think about pest management in your garden. Winter is the best time to think about garden pest management. With some forehand knowledge you should be able to bi-pass harsh pesticides and enjoy your organic garden.
We often attack pests in a panic with toxic pesticides which are like "quick fix" with lots of unfortunate side effects for your garden. Take a minute today to think about garden pests that will visit the garden this summer and the earth friendly ways to control them so that we can have more fun in our garden this summer.
No garden wants to have slugs in it. They leave holes in our hostas making them look like a ragged mess and they also leave slimy trails all over the garden. Yuck. Before you break out the most deadly of slug pellets which will also kill all the snakes, toads and little bird feedingcreatures you can try some other things. Upside down pots make great slug traps, you just have to clean them out during the day before they crawl back into your garden. Slugs will crawl under old newspaper bundles strewn around the garden and then you can just pick them up and toss them in the garbage. Use soda cans with a few tablespoons of a solution of beer, water and yeast as a crawl in but don't crawl out trap. You can spread used coffee grinds like mulch to keep slugs away. Alternative methods may not be an absolute cure, but they are better for your garden and the critters living there than harsh chemicals.
Japanese beetle, black vine weevil, fleas and cucumber beetles are some more unwelcome guests in your plants. Japanese beetles love to feast on yellow flowers...Color choices in the garden can impact what pests come to your garden. Blame Black Vine Weevil Beetle for jagged leaf cuts on your rhodos, and Cucumber Beetles make polka dots on your daisies.
Toxic chemicals will kill these garden pests, but they will also kill everythings else: put beneficial nematodes to work instead. Nematodes are teeny tiny little worms that are applied to plant roots by mixing with water and spraying on garden. Spray or pour nematodes around your garden in the evening or on a cloudy day as sunlight will cause them to parish. These namatodes are like little missiles in search of the offending grubs in your garden. They pose no harm to your family but are an effective weapon against grubs. Apply them in the spring and again in the fall. Nematodes while initially expensive are a long term solution saving you a lot of money later. Say good bye to grubs forever by applying beneficial nematodes on your lawn. These are like the whole body cure for your garden and the planet.
Aphids can be a nuisance especially on roses. Blast them with a strong stream of water a couple of times. You can spray them with a spray bottle filled with soapy water and vegetable oil. You can try predatory lady bugs and praying mantis, but these bugs are kind of like hiring interns to do a job: they don't always show up when you need them the most and you still have to pay for them.
Mosquitos are an unwelcome guest in the garden! Citronella is probably your best and most accessible weapon against them in your garden. Firepotsfilled withcitronella fuel gelare a key defense against these invasive and unwelcome garden pests!
Put these alternative bug killing methods to work and rest assured with the knowledge that you are not contaminating our already over poisoned planet. While these measures may not kill every living pest in your garden you can sleep knowing you are doing your best to create a balanced environment. You are doing the world a favor when you think before you break out the toxic chemicals which kill everything including the honey bees and the butterflies which actually enhance and decorate your garden. Think about what your are doing to the planet before you act rashly and purchase a pesticide.
