How to Start Your Radio Control Car Hobby
Racing radio controlled cars is a fantastically exciting hobby. But one of the first questions for the newcomer to radio controlled cars is whether to choose an electric car or nitro powered car.
As a general rule nitro RC cars are really best for someone who has gained a little experience. And that experience is best acquired with an electric rc car.
Electric RC cars are simpler. They are much quieter and don't require the routine maintenance that nitro powered cars demand. The downside of electric is that they don't quite have the realism of nitro powered and some are less powerful.
But there are some fantastic electric RC cars that are equal to any nitro powered model. I always recommend buying at least two battery packs and mayber even three or four if you have the budget. These packs can last as little as 5 minutes and take around 30 minutes to charge so you can have a lot more fun if you have spare, fully charged battery packs.
My personal favourite models are off-road dune buggys that I like to race around the sand dunes on some nearby beaches. I like to take along maybe four or five fully charged battery packs, just to make the most of my time jumping and racing in the sand dunes.
The key advantage of electric over nitro powered radio controlled cars is how easy they are to maintain. Like real cars nitro powered rc cars use real engines and these need the same sort of maintenance as the full size models. Electric RC cars are much simpler and therefore much more suitable for beginners and youngsters.
You can get both electric and nitro RC cars in kit form and this adds another aspect to the hobby. By building your own RC car you will learn lots about engineering and RC cars and this can be very satisfying. As I've said, I recommend that you start out with an electric car and then, maybe, move on to a nitro model if you get into the hobby.
BioWare's Casey Hudson Talks About Finishing Mass Effect 3, DLC Plans, And More (Game Informer)
Last month, I journeyed north to Canada to take an early look at three lengthy
missions from BioWare's upcoming epic sci-fi RPG Mass Effect 3. You can read
an in-depth report on my experience with the game in the February 2012 issue
of _Game Informer_, but while I was there I also had a chance to sit down with
BioWare executive producer Casey Hudson. We discussed the monumental task of
finishing such a complex, interconnected series, new game mode options being
introduced in Mass Effect 3, and what he sees in BioWare's future.
**Game Informer: What struck me immediately with the stuff I just played in
Mass Effect 3 - I've actually been replaying Mass Effect 2 on insanity
difficulty the last couple of weeks, so it's very fresh in my mind what the
gameplay and missions are like in that. The missions I played in Mass Effect 3
have a little more variety. Things get switched up more. In Mass Effect 2, the
missions get into this very recognizable cycle. It's a cycle I enjoyed, but it
was very much, "talk to somebody, go down a hallway, enter a room with some
cover, ...
