Automotive Ball Joint Pullers

To remove ball joints, skilled auto mechanics use a very specific tool known as ball joint pullers. Not for an unskilled mechanic, these tools are expressly designed to separate the component known as a ball joint from the support arm located between the suspension system of an automobile and its front wheels. Ball joints are essentially points of pivot that allow a vehicle to properly turn its wheels. Under normal conditions, they do not require frequent replacement.

Depending on the automobile to which they are attached, ball joints come in different sizes. Separators, or pullers, come in different sizes as well, although the tools are typically adjustable to allow for the removal of ball joints of different size. With a three-way pivot, spherical ball joints help to control the turning of a vehicle’s wheels. To remove, replace or re-lubricate a ball joint, an auto technician uses the puller.

This mechanic’s tool is made from drop-forged, heavy-duty alloy steel. Consisting of two pieces of steel attached by a pivot, one resembles a two-tyne fork. The other piece is somewhat flattened shaft with one end bent. The pieces are joined by a pivot bolt. The forcing screw at the other end of the tool is the part that presses the open ends together. Upon adjusting this bolt with a spanner once the puller is in place, the working ends of the tool create a wedging force that separates the ball joint from the other components of the suspension system.

To use a ball joint puller, the fork-like part is placed between the top of the ball joint and the control arm. The flat, bent side of the tool sits atop the narrow end of the ball joint. With an open-end spanner, you adjust the forcing screw nut clockwise to move the ends of the tool. The tightly fixed ball joint pops free as you turn the screw, creating leverage.

Ball joint pullers are available individually or in sets. Commercial auto shops most benefit from a versatile set of pullers, giving their technicians the ability to remove, inspect and replace ball joints found on virtually any passenger car, truck or SUV.

Where should I go to find out the date and value of a super old iron axe from China?

I can tell that the wooden handle has been replaced but the iron axe head itself looks to be a drop forged piece of iron with an odd looking bearded dragon with curly hair and long hairs on the bottom of his chin. What interest me most about this design is that there is a dragon on both sides with same curly long hair design yet they look dramatically different with one being way larger than the other... How should I go about finding the age and the location in which it was made and if possible the value... It is extremely heavy, with a few imperfections near the back of the axe head top on one side(a few tiny holes and one bigger hole),about 6 inches from the top to bottom,5 1/2 inches from back to front and is the back part of the axe is about 3/4 of an inch thick.... Thanks for the details in your answer... Je

I would go to a Historian, who would then known contacts or he himself may know when the item was made in about which time period and if it is a replica or not. Then, thus the value....?
