Aimpont 3XMag And Micro T-1
Since 1975 Aimpoint has lead the World with its range of ultra rugged red dot sights. The US Army wanted the best red dot sight money could buy for its soldiers and got it in the Aimpoint CompM2 which it type classified and bought in huge numbers as the M68 CCO. The Army soon found its qualification scores increasing and its troops becoming more effective in the kind of close quarters scenarios that were commonplace in Iraq. The M68 won a accolades for itself in battle in Iraq and Afghanistan, but the US Army wanted to give its troops an even better unit with improvements they would specify. The first thing to go was the rare and expensive N cell battery, replaced by the ubiquitous AA. Secondly, they wanted a sight that didn't sit in a ring where it could rotate with respect to the weapon, throwing shots off target. Lastly, the red dot brightness adjuster switch's relative fragility had been the Achillies heel of the original M68. Aimpoint in the meantime had increased the battery life of its CompM2 to a remarkable 8 years, resulting in the CompM3. This technology was applied to the new US Army design, the CompM4. The result was the CompM4, bought in trial quantities and privately by the US Army. The US Army requested that the battery and brightness adjuster housing be put in a lower position resulting in the CompM4s of which the US Army promptly ordered over half a million as the new M68 CCO.
However, the US Army wasn't content with one aspect of the CompM4s - it's weight. Hauling kit around the valleys of Afghanistan, soldiers who ten years ago would have been trying to cut weight by pounds were now talking in ounces. Afghanistan's rugged terrain and rarified atmosphere was placing incredible demands on soldiers forced to pack their gear across mountain ranges. As a result, US Army soldiers increasingly started to purchase their own Aimpoint Micro T-1 red dot sights. The Aimpoint Micro T-1 is a 4MOA red dot sight that, with it's built in thumb nut operated MIL STD 1913 mount only weighs 3.7 ounces. In service the thubscrew mount is often replaced with the LaRue Tactical LT660, a locking quick release mount that lifts the sight to the right height for in-service night vision systems and co-witnessing in the bottom third of the aiming window.
Recent photographs from Afghanistan show the Aimpoint Micro T-1 in un use with the Aimpoint 3xMag magnifier on the unique Aimpoint TwistMount, sometimes with the optional TwistMount Co-witnessing Spacer which puts the Aimpoint magnifier at the correct height for the Micro T1 when used with the LT660 quick release mount. The 4 MOA red dot can be a bit large for very long range shooting but the combination is very versatile and saves a lot of weight over the alternative of a CompM4 and an M150 ACOG. Although some ACOGs now boast piggy-backed Docter or RMR rearsights, the Aimpoint combination has the advantage that the red dot sight is visible through in-line night vision in a combination that is easily co-witnessed. The T-1 is also increasingly in use as a secondary sight on weapons primarily equipped with high magnification optics. For a sniper or designated marksman, the ability to instantly engage close range targets can be vital. Now, should an enemy pop up thirty metres away, all he or she has to do is tilt the rifle 45 degrees and take the shot using his offset mounted Micro T1. Although it was never intended for military use, it is highly likely that the T-1 and 3xMag Twistmount combination will be type classified by the US Military in the near future.
