How to Get Started with Radio Controlled Cars
Racing radio controlled cars is a fantastically exciting hobby. But one of the first questions for the newcomer to radio controlled cars is whether to choose an electric car or nitro powered car.
As a general rule nitro RC cars are really best for someone who has gained a little experience. And that experience is best acquired with an electric rc car.
Electric RC cars are simpler. They are much quieter and don't require the routine maintenance that nitro powered cars demand. The downside of electric is that they don't quite have the realism of nitro powered and some are less powerful.
But there are some fantastic electric RC cars that are equal to any nitro powered model. I recommend that you buy at least two and maybe three battery packs if you have the funds. Battery packs can generally be charged in around 3 minutes but some only last for about 5 minutes so it is always worthwhile buying a few to make the most of your car.
I love off road rc cars, especially dune buggys which I take to the sand dunes on some beached near to where I live. I take along several fully charged battery packs so that I can get as much time as possible jumping around the sand dunes.
The main advantage of electric over nitro powered rc cars is maintenance simplicity. Like real cars nitro powered rc cars use real engines and these need the same sort of maintenance as the full size models. Electric RC cars are much simpler and therefore much more suitable for beginners and youngsters.
You can find both electric and nitro RC cars in kit for and this can bring another aspect of enjoyment and satisfaction to the hobby. Building your own RC car can be enormously satisfying and is a great learning experience. As I've said, I recommend that you start out with an electric car and then, maybe, move on to a nitro model if you get into the hobby.
Smart to unveil tiny For-US electric pickup at North American International Auto Show (Engadget)
Do you dig the size and efficiency of the Smart Fortwo, but need something a
little more manly than that snub-nosed hatchback? Well, it looks like your
prayers will be answered at January's North American International Auto Show
in Detroit. Reports have it that will be where the For-US, Smart's plug-in
pickup, will have its official unveiling. At about 12 feet long the "truck" is
almost 50-percent larger than its sub-compact counterpart, but that extra room
is put to good use. The bed in the back is home to a pair docking stations for
the company's Ebikes. It's a pretty interesting concept, but we're wondering
how lugging two heavy electric cycles will affect the range of 17.7kW/h
