The Blue King Crab Has Returned
There are over 40 different species of King crab. Those that are fished around the waters in Alaska known as Alaskan Crab Legs are the Red King, Blue King, and Golden King. As of the end of 1990 the population of the Blue King crab (Paralithodes platypus) had almost disappeared and fisheries were closing as of 1999. How is it that the Blue King crab has returned?
From the 60’s to the 80’s, when crab fishing was its highest, over twenty years of commercial crab fishing, which started in Pribilo Islands in the Bearing Sea, had slowly exterminated the crabs from existence. Only 8 % of the crabs were left in 1992; and in 1998, commercial crab fishing became illegal.
Because of the declining population a rehabilitation study was begun to establish perfect conditions in order to learn the cultivation of the larvae starting from point A, hatching, to point B, juvenile. In 2006 fisherman were fishing crabs for this program. It was important to very carefully document all stages of life, what the crab ate, the ideal temperature, and how long they lived. They were triumphant in their study. The Blue King Crab has returned!
A female crab carrier has her eggs on her belly. They produce hundreds of thousands annually but hatch once a year only, and for the following year the female crab will have her sabbatical. It is easy to study crabs because you’ll find everything you need inside them.
Years of investigation brought success in the fall of 2009 when the supply in the ocean was beginning to increase. The fishermen returned to work and the crabs had returned.
The crabs were huge and their sizes were the largest ever. Their right appendage is enormous. In size. Like all the other crabs, the blue crab will turn yellow orange when exposed to heat. St. Matthew Islands has the distinction of being the record holder where the biggest crab was found, which was approximately 17 pounds heavy.
Crabs are classified according to the number of their legs, including the pinchers. A ten pounder would have six to 9 legs. Blue crabs can be as tasty as red crabs. However, the red crabs are the best tasting in all crabs with its, tender, juicy, and ambrosia- like meat.
The crabs are fried in hot oil immediately after fished out of the sea and then soaked in ice to preserve its savory taste. Wait 12 hours when thawing and Cooking King Crab Legs using your favorite menu.
Everybody’s happy with the return of the Alaskan Crab Legs. The fishers, the restaurant owners, and the diners are back to their old happy days.
