Humpback Whales Visit Banderas Bay In Mexico
Among Puerto Vallarta's main attractions we can mention the Humpback Whale, they visit frequently and stay for 4 to 5 months in the Banderas Bay, read a bit more and find out about these friendly mammals in this article.
Every year the Bay of Banderas is graced with the visit of the giant and amiable Humpback whales. Evolutionary studies and fossil records date the ancestors of the whale all the way back to the Eocene period, in this case, around 50 million years in the past.
The whales visit the area mainly to mate and to give birth to their young, once this is over they go back to the northerly seas. They arrive in the Bay of Banderas in the last week of October and leave the area when March is finishing.
Whales belong to the order Cetacea, which includes dolphins and porpoises; they are marine mammals that are descendants of ancient land mammals. This terrestrial origin is clear because they need to breathe air in the atmosphere. Other clues are found in the bone structure of their fins, which have the same design as their land ancestors and the vertical movement of their columns which is equivalent to mammals and not fish.
How they developed from land animals to their present giant marine form was a mystery, but experts lately have found fossil evidence in Pakistan, which represent the multiple steps in the evolution from the previous land forms to the seafaring ones. All cetaceans are descendants of a land mammal from the Arthiodactila order, which includes animals like the hippopotamus, pig, and deer. Cetaceans and Artiodactyls are both related to the Indohyus, an extinct semi-aquatic deer, from which they diverged and evolved 54 million years back. The earliest whales became marine some 50 million years ago and entirely marine forms evolved some 5 to 10 million years later.
These incredible Humpback whales have the peculiarity of having a black and white pattern and grey spots under their tail. These are unique for all whales and are useful in identifying each separate whale. Biologists and other scientists can through the years, spot one individual from any other, identify whom they have paired with and guess the number of whales in a certain group. This info helps protect and ensure the survival of these attractive creatures, as they're now threatened and are in danger of extinction.
The sad part is that notwithstanding protection, they are still endangered and threatened. For instance, some states disregard the whale hunting prohibition, plus there are other dangers like underwater nets that entangle and drown them, ships and boats that run them over and more. Noise from ships and boats is also really damaging to these animals. Underwater explosions, high level sonar, mining operations, oil spills and pollution can disorient them, poison or sicken them. Even whale watching tours is negative if not done under firm guidelines and rules.
One of the impressive feats these whales perform are the jumps out of the ocean. Their bodies shoot out from the sea, now and then spinning in the air while they spread their fins and then drop back into the water with a gigantic splash.
These jumps have been studied and some believe they might be playing, are trying to take off sea lice, barnacles and other parasites that grow on their surface or they may also be trying to communicate with other whales through this demonstration of both strength and power. Sometimes they also slap the water surface with their fins or tail. Once again perhaps playfully or maybe as a courting display. These activities usually hurt the whales when barnacles and sea lice rip off the whales skin.
Another common behavior among whales is to surface and watch us, just as we watch them. They some out to the surface very slowly, they then roll a bit so they can get a better view of us and our boats and then they once more submerge into the ocean.

Metal Sci Fi toy/Spaceship/1965-1975ish/ Metallic green... Where should I start looking?
For 30 years I've been looking for it. I thought it was from "Space 1999" but no luck. From memory (when I was about 10): It is a metallic dark green with smooth contours, sits on 3 skis (I think red or orange). The nose cone seems to have a large white missile with a band around it. It has very short wings and a the vertical tail fin with a horizontal fins at the top. The cockpit window goes around to both sides I think. Picture a land rocket (used to make land speed records) but scrunched all together on skis instead of wheels. Ut has some sort of rockets on the backside. Please help!
***Thunderbird 2 was a good guess but it's nothing like it. It is almost as tall as it is long. And it has only one tail fin with a horizontal on top of it.
It would only be big enough for a two seater at the most I think.
